SUMMARY:STAPT Winter Talks 2023: "Dean Linskill and The Adventuress" Stephen Liscoe
DESCRIPTION:As Dean of Guilds William Thomas Linskill was a significant figure in the recent civil history of St Andrews\, and also in the pre-eminence of golf in the town. Aside from his devotion to the town as a civil servant he was a man of antiquarian interests – and some peculiar obsessions. One in particular is a lost chapter of the town’s recent past.\n\nStephen Liscoe\n\nFormerly a diving archaeologist working as part of the Mary Rose excavation team I spent the last decades of the 20thC working on coastal survey boats undertaking diving inspection and hydrographic survey of historic shipwrecks sites for HM Govt. I was concurrently a staff research er at the Scottish institute of Maritime Studies here at the University of St Andrews until I joined the Fife Council’s Archaeological Unit. The Unit provides historical\, archaeological and planning advice and information to Fife Council but also deals with archaeological and related enquiries from the public and external organisations. I have been part of the Unit since 2004 and am responsible for maintaining and developing the Fife Sites & Monuments Record\, containing over 11\,000 records of archaeological sites for Fife.

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture 2023
DESCRIPTION:STAPT welcomes Neale Elder\, mobile operations manager at Network Rail and a member of the Dundee Civic Trust\, to present the Annual Lecture for 2023\n  \nWhen the railways began to appear in north-east Fife in the 1840s\, the national system was already in a state of rapid expansion. Although isolated by the great sea firths on either side\, it would not be long before the strategic importance of the new main line between Burntisland and Tayport was realised. \n  \nNeale will talk about the development of the system from its origins as the Edinburgh & Northern Railway\, with the critical involvement of Thomas Bouch who developed the revolutionary train ferries long before his reputation was ruined by the Tay Bridge Disaster. He will then look at the appearance of the branch lines serving St Andrews\, Newport and the East Neuk\, followed by the consolidation of the main line as part of the East Coast route to Aberdeen\, before the contraction of the 1950s and 1960s. The talk will end with a look at the events of the last 30 years since the breakup of British Rail\, considering what the future may now hold. \n  \nThe Annual Lecture will be held on Wednesday\, 22nd November at 7pm in the St Andrews Bowling Club (1 Pipeland Road\, St Andrews). Wine and non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided. \nBuy Your Tickets Today\n  \nMembers of the Trust are entitled to discounted entry. If you are not a member of the Trust but would like to join and enjoy the same and additional discounts throughout the year\, purchase a non-member ticket and indicate that you are interested in joining. Sam Ross\, Trust Manager\, will then contact you.  \n  \nTickets are available online or at the door. If you are able\, please purchase your ticket ahead of time.

SUMMARY:Winter Talk 2: David Powell on the DC Thomson Archives
DESCRIPTION:In the second in the series of the Trust’s winter talks for 2024 we welcome David Powell of DC Thomson to speak about the DC Thomson archives. \nThe Archives\nThe archives of DC Thomson have accumulated over the past 250 years as both the titles and business have evolved.  As well as being a valuable business asset they have a wider value to the communities who worked for\, contributed to\, featured in\, or consumed\, our products.  This light-hearted tour through the collections will show their breadth\, influence and use and hopefully spark a few memories\, taking in newspapers\, comics\, magazines and our photographic collections. \n\nAbout David Powell\nI have been Archive Manager at DC Thomson since 2014.  I have worked as an archivist in Scotland since 2001\, working in the public\, university and private sector with a specialism in the archives of business.  In that time I’ve worked with the records of the heavy industries of the west of Scotland\, handled dynamite\, rescued records from textile mills while the wrecking ball was waiting outside and seen more basements and attics full of records and moth frass that I care to remember. \nAt DCT I’m responsible for the documentary and physical heritage of the business and working with people across the business to make use of it as a business asset.\n\n\nMember Ticket £3\n\n\nNon-member Ticket £5

SUMMARY:Doors Open Day - Bogward Doocot\, St Andrews
DESCRIPTION:   \nJoin us on Sunday 8th September for an interesting peek inside the Doocot\, a wander around the Lade Braes and to find out more about our preservation goals\, events and membership.  Activities for adults and children alike include storytelling by a professional storyteller and a guided walk of the Boase woodland.  Refreshments and leaflets will also be available. \n \nThe Bogward Doocot is a sixteenth century building of the ‘beehive’ type\, so called because the circular shape resembled the bee-skeps or hives of the time. As recently as the 1960s it was part of the Bogward Farm and no modern houses then straddled the Lade Braes walk. About a mile out of central St Andrews\, it can be reached on foot via the Lade Braes walk or by car via the Canongate or Hepburn Gardens\, then turning into Bogward and then Doocot Road.  \n \nVenue: Bogward Doocot\, 44 Doocot Road\, St Andrews\, KY16 8QP   \nDate: Sunday 8th September 2024 \nTime: 11am – 4pm\, entry as desired \n  \nUnfortunately\, the venue is not accessible for wheelchair users and is not equipped with toilet facilities.

DESCRIPTION:Biba and the Jetsons of Kilrymont\n17 September\, 2.30pm at the St Andrews Bowling Club. Hosted by Ian Davidson. \nThis talk will take a look at the design of this School and the influences of the 1950s and 60s on its architect. It will reveal an amazing amalgam of Scandinavian\, Japanese\, Modernist and American elements. The space race can be discerned in its shapes and materials\, as can the colours of the swinging 60’s. It was the final fling of the County Architect. This talk will confirm that after WW2 St Andrews was a dynamic and forward-looking town that embraced opportunity and celebrated its heritage of education.

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture - What Makes St Andrews Special
DESCRIPTION:Annual Lecture – What Makes St Andrews Special\nThis year\, Nigel Edward Morecroft will talk about his book St Andrews: Camelot of Golf. Partly a social history\, he will discuss the role of artisans\, women and students in shaping modern St Andrews and will explain that for a small town\, St Andrews possessed unusually varied and talented people across all strata of society who not only established St Andrews as the ‘Home of Golf’ but also took golf to the rest of the world. While he will refer to golf and golfers\, the town of St Andrews rather than sport will be the main theme of the presentation. \n \n \nAcademics refer to Genius Loci\, or the essence of a place\, so one particular aspect he will explore\, and would like to discuss with the audience\, is ‘What makes St Andrews Special?’ and why his question produces an array of different answers. He hopes to gain some new insights from devotees of the Preservation Trust! \n \n \nThe talk will be accompanied by attractive illustrations including paintings\, photographs and railway posters which will highlight how these striking images\, along with the written word in the form of poems and books\, all helped to establish perceptions about St Andrews during the period from 1850 to 1950. \n \n Click here for Non-Member Tickets (£8)\n \n \n Click here for Member Tickets (£6)\n \nThe event is taking place at St Andrews Bowling Club\, 1 Pipeland Road\, St Andrews KY16 8JN. \nIt will be held at 7pm on the 27th of November.

SUMMARY:Winter Talk 1: David Annand - Sculpting Old Tom Morris
DESCRIPTION:Winter Talk 1: David Annand – Sculpting Old Tom Morris\n \nIt’s our privilege to welcome on Tuesday 28 January 2025\, Fife’s own Duncan Annand\, Public Artist and Sculptor\, and Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors\, to speak about the making of his bronze statue of “Old Tom Morris”\, who needs no introduction. This new work stands in Bow Butts on Golf Place\, St Andrews\, and was unveiled in October 2024. He will bring an artist’s viewpoint to history and speak about how his quietly engaging work contributes to a sense of place. With his humble view of his role in the creation of his work\, he sees himself as “standing on the shoulders of giants”.  He will reveal the fascinating journey of making a bronze sculpture\, and how he brings “vitality\, balance\, gravity and irony” to his figurative work. He will show some of the other work he has been commissioned to make and share what he has learned about his subjects in the process. Part tribute to the man who was Old Tom Morris\, as well as the other great characters of Scottish History that he has had the honour to portray\, his talk will be sprinkled with some humorous anecdotes\, speculation on their lives\, and possibly even opinions about golf. \nLocation: St Andrews Bowling Club\, 1 Pipeland Road\, St Andrews KY16 8JN \nDate: Tuesday 28th January 2025 \nTime: 2:30pm \n \n Member Tickets £3\n \n \n Non-Member Tickets £5
