SUMMARY:STAPT Winter Talks 2023: "Dean Linskill and The Adventuress" Stephen Liscoe
DESCRIPTION:As Dean of Guilds William Thomas Linskill was a significant figure in the recent civil history of St Andrews\, and also in the pre-eminence of golf in the town. Aside from his devotion to the town as a civil servant he was a man of antiquarian interests – and some peculiar obsessions. One in particular is a lost chapter of the town’s recent past.\n\nStephen Liscoe\n\nFormerly a diving archaeologist working as part of the Mary Rose excavation team I spent the last decades of the 20thC working on coastal survey boats undertaking diving inspection and hydrographic survey of historic shipwrecks sites for HM Govt. I was concurrently a staff research er at the Scottish institute of Maritime Studies here at the University of St Andrews until I joined the Fife Council’s Archaeological Unit. The Unit provides historical\, archaeological and planning advice and information to Fife Council but also deals with archaeological and related enquiries from the public and external organisations. I have been part of the Unit since 2004 and am responsible for maintaining and developing the Fife Sites & Monuments Record\, containing over 11\,000 records of archaeological sites for Fife.

SUMMARY:Annual Lecture 2023
DESCRIPTION:STAPT welcomes Neale Elder\, mobile operations manager at Network Rail and a member of the Dundee Civic Trust\, to present the Annual Lecture for 2023\n  \nWhen the railways began to appear in north-east Fife in the 1840s\, the national system was already in a state of rapid expansion. Although isolated by the great sea firths on either side\, it would not be long before the strategic importance of the new main line between Burntisland and Tayport was realised. \n  \nNeale will talk about the development of the system from its origins as the Edinburgh & Northern Railway\, with the critical involvement of Thomas Bouch who developed the revolutionary train ferries long before his reputation was ruined by the Tay Bridge Disaster. He will then look at the appearance of the branch lines serving St Andrews\, Newport and the East Neuk\, followed by the consolidation of the main line as part of the East Coast route to Aberdeen\, before the contraction of the 1950s and 1960s. The talk will end with a look at the events of the last 30 years since the breakup of British Rail\, considering what the future may now hold. \n  \nThe Annual Lecture will be held on Wednesday\, 22nd November at 7pm in the St Andrews Bowling Club (1 Pipeland Road\, St Andrews). Wine and non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided. \nBuy Your Tickets Today\n  \nMembers of the Trust are entitled to discounted entry. If you are not a member of the Trust but would like to join and enjoy the same and additional discounts throughout the year\, purchase a non-member ticket and indicate that you are interested in joining. Sam Ross\, Trust Manager\, will then contact you.  \n  \nTickets are available online or at the door. If you are able\, please purchase your ticket ahead of time.

SUMMARY:Winter Talk 2: David Powell on the DC Thomson Archives
DESCRIPTION:In the second in the series of the Trust’s winter talks for 2024 we welcome David Powell of DC Thomson to speak about the DC Thomson archives. \nThe Archives\nThe archives of DC Thomson have accumulated over the past 250 years as both the titles and business have evolved.  As well as being a valuable business asset they have a wider value to the communities who worked for\, contributed to\, featured in\, or consumed\, our products.  This light-hearted tour through the collections will show their breadth\, influence and use and hopefully spark a few memories\, taking in newspapers\, comics\, magazines and our photographic collections. \n\nAbout David Powell\nI have been Archive Manager at DC Thomson since 2014.  I have worked as an archivist in Scotland since 2001\, working in the public\, university and private sector with a specialism in the archives of business.  In that time I’ve worked with the records of the heavy industries of the west of Scotland\, handled dynamite\, rescued records from textile mills while the wrecking ball was waiting outside and seen more basements and attics full of records and moth frass that I care to remember. \nAt DCT I’m responsible for the documentary and physical heritage of the business and working with people across the business to make use of it as a business asset.\n\n\nMember Ticket £3\n\n\nNon-member Ticket £5
